larimar or blue pectolite is an extremely rare
larimar or blue pectolite is an extremely rare gemstone. It has been found only in one location: a mountainous, relatively inaccessible area in the province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic. The first mention of the stone is in a request to mine larimar in 1916, however it wasn’t until 1974 that the stone really made an appearance. In 1974, Norman Rilling, a member of the U.S. Peace Corps, and Miguel M ndez, a Dominican found pieces of larimar on the seashore. The word larimar was created by Mendez, who combined his daughter’s name Larissa with the Spanish world for sea, Mar. Before Mendez and Rilling, local inhabitants of the region and their ancestors had long been aware of the stone. Early theories suggested larimar was produced by the Sea, later by the earth’s volcanic movements. Island legends said that the stones could be collected easily on the beach, but one day there were no more blue larimar stones left. Locals explored upstream and found a rock formation, which appeared to be the source of the blue stone. This legend holds truth; Mendez and Rilling in 1974 would follow a river upstream and find sources of the blue stone. Most small blocks of larimar are in situ, meaning they exist in the very place where they formed. However through soil erosion some pieces broke off and were moved by rainfall down the slopes of the hillsides to rivers. The river deposited them in the Caribbean Sea, some pieces washed up on the seashore by waves. The stone is formed when hot gases push crystallized minerals up though volcanic ‘tubes’. In order to mine and excavate the stone miners must identify these tubes and dig deeper and deeper into old volcanoes. larimar is used most often to make jewelry but has also been used to make beads, decorative objects and even handles on cabinets. larimar is considered a healing stone, and said to be finely tuned to the human body particularly to the throat area. It is said that it increases speech and communication skills and supports the body’s natural healing process. Persons believing in this have been known to wear larimar jewelry or to put pieces of larimar in their pockets or under their pillows. larimar is also called the Atlantis Stone, because a Spiritual master who lived in Trinidad and Tobago and who founded many Yoga Centers across the world, claimed that some islands in the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic were part of the lost continent of Atlantis. He went further to say that on one of those islands a blue stone with healing powers would be found - a description that corresponds to larimar. Today, there are thousands of people, naturalists and persons practicing alternative and holistic healing methods, who use larimar to assist and reinforce healing processes. larimar’s beautiful blue color is often considered to embody the beautiful blue colors of the sea and sky found in the Caribbean. Its origin and appearance have made it popularly known as the Caribbean Gem.

The same is true of cities on the tourist trail such as Puerto Plata and La Romana. On the shelves, you will, of course, find cigars which some say are better than the famous Havanas, as well as coffee, rum, compact discs of merengue and bachata music, a wide range of handicrafts (mostly from Haiti )and amber. You will also comeacross larimar, a semiprecious turquoise blue stone found only in the Dominican Republic. Its name is a hybrid of Larissa, a girl’s name and mar, which means “sea” in Spanish. Those without a mule or robust motorbike will greatly appreciate an off-road vehicle as they climb the narrow rocky path to the Los Checheses larimar mine. You reach it by leaving the Barahona to Pedernales road, on the Haitian border, on the coast a few kilometres after Bahoruco. The trip takes perhaps an hour, giving you time to discuss the rugged geography or the extremely harsh living conditions of the Haitians in the bateyes that you pass on the way. You might also ponder how the larimar stones, discovered buried in the sand by a man called Miguel Fuentes, actually got there. No four-wheel drive was involved in their journey. In fact, they were swept down the Filipinas valley by river or stream only to be thrown back by the sea. As a result, people naturally assumed they had comefrom the sea, which explains part of the name they were given bythe first craftsman to work with them. (Larissa, his daughter, was the inspiration for the other part).

larimar is an extremely rare precious stone that has only been found at a single location on the planet: on the island of Hispanola in a mountainous, relatively inaccessible region of the Dominican Republic overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This gemstone was first discovered in 1974 by an American Peace Corp worker and a Dominican geologist, although the inhabitants and their ancestors at the location were long aware of the stone. They had once traveled upstream until they came up against a rock formation that seemed to be the source of this blue precious stone, and subsequently gathered the stones on the beach for decades. The name “larimar” was given to the stone by the Dominican geologist, Miguel Mendez, combining his daughter’s name LARIssa and MAR the Spanish word for sea. The stone is also called the Atlantis Stone, since a wise prophet once claimed that the Dominican Republic was part of the lost continent of Atlantis, a connection that has been affirmed by various spiritual and metaphysical authorities. Until now this valuable new discovery remained available only to those who visited the Caribbean. Presently, increased interest and scarcity have made this gem very desirable and extremely valuable! The larimar Museum, located in Santo Domingo, is dedicated to showing and displaying this stone. larimar has been tentatively identified as pectolite (NaCa2[Si3080H], but doubt remains among several mineralogists about this determination. Since the material is of volcanic origin, and it is often a replacement mineral, great variability exists in its composition. Undoubtedly there is some pectolite, but chemical analysis indicates minimal amounts of sodium. Some needle growth within the blue areas has high aluminum content, which is suggestive of natrolite. Much of the material is calcium silicate with occasional native copper flecks. Recent finds include “scenic” pieces with red plumes (iron) on a blue background and white “clouds”. Other samples contain pieces resembling thomsonites, some talc and several microminerals. The deposit where it is found is clearly volcanic, and gas pockets are filled with various minerals, with larimar being most abundant filler. It exists in several shades of blue and green, from translucent to dark. Much of the highest-quality larimar appears to fill pockets created by the volatization of trees burned by volcanic activity. Naturally, this was a variable process, and some trees were more rapidly and completely burned than others. As a result, there are some pieces of carbon, some with partial larimar replacement, and some with no indication of their organic origin. Like diamond and emerald only 3% of all the stones mined are of gem quality. Hardness varies, but most material is from 5 to 7 on the Mohs’ scale. The color sometimes produces reticulate patterns of blue and white and there is often a pronounced silky area. Color — Blue-green, white, gray. Optics — R.I . 1.60-1.64 (usually spot reading of 1.60). Biaxial positive. Vitreous (glassy) to silky luster. Durability — Hardness 4.5-5. Splintery fracture and perfect cleavage in one direction. Crystal structure — Triclinic. Specific Gravity — 2.74-2.88. Sources — Dominican Republic, Canada (Quebec), U.S.A. (New Jersey, Alaska, California)). The best known source is the Dominican Republic, from whence fine copper-colored blue material is marketed under the tradename “larimar.” larimar often has a characteristic white spider-veined or cellular appearance. Though locally abundant, fine pectolite is rather scarce. larimar is a rare form of pectolite, which was discovered in the 1970’s and is found primarily in the Dominican Republic. It has an extraordinary blue appearance similar to the color of the ocean in tropical areas. Hardness varies between 5-7 on the Mohs scale with the darker blue stones ranging closer to 7. This Caribbean gemstone sometimes may be mistaken for turquoise. larimar is said to help us to view events from a different perspective; it softens, enlightens and heals in a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual way, stimulates the heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras facilitating inner wisdom and outer manifestation. It represents peace and clarity radiating healing and love energy. It is recommended for people who are stressed.
